Isshin-ryu karate, founded by Shimabuku Tatsuo is a style of Okinawan karate, which emerged in the early 1900s. The name means, literally, "one mind way" . The system has strong emphasis on its kata. There are thirteen kata which are agreed upon in Isshin-ryu: eight empty-handed kata and three bo (staff) kata and two sai (forked weapon) kata, although there can be more weapon forms. Some schools of Isshin-ryu include other weapon kata in their syllabus, including tonfa (grinder handle) and nunchaku (flail). |
