Gatka is the traditional Sikh martial art originating from the region of Punjab, in Northern India, which mostly incorporates weapons. It is an ancient battle-tested martial art, the sword is the main weapon used. Today, it exists exclusively amongst the Sikhs who have passed down the flamboyant techniques through generations. There are three primary weapons in Gatka; they are the sword, sticks (from one to three meters in length) and flexible weapons, such as whips and chains.
The exact origins of Gatka are not clear. Some have said that Gatka is the original grandparent of all modern martial arts, which came out of northern India towards China. The Sikhs, despite almost always numbering far fewer than the opposing forces, decisively won many hundreds, if not thousands, of battles, a large part of there battlefield success was due to mastering Gatka. The techniques within Gatka were combined with the spiritual practices of the Sikhs to create a perfect fighting system.
The Sikhs actively used Gatka in warfare for over 200 years, until they finally enjoyed peace under their own rule. Since then, Gatka has been passed down as a tradition amongst the Sikh generations.
